Casa Iguana October 2007
We had a wonderful family-and-friends trip to Akumal recently - ages ranging from 71 years old to 10 months. We utilized Casa Iguana, which has two separate living spaces, and Hotel Akumal Caribe. Casa Iguana is located right on the water between Akumal Playa and Half Moon Bay. It has a gorgeous palapa on the water's edge of the property where the crashing waves lull you asleep and drown out all other noises. You can relax and read a book in the comfort of the Adirondack chairs or Maya hammocks.
Casa Iguana is the perfect spot for entertaining – or a wedding, for that matter. Situated back from the water is a sandy play area perfect for some soccer or volley ball. Behind that is the gorgeous pool with its spacious deck. There are stairs leading from the living quarters up to the pool, a plus for those traveling with small children. There is an outside grill and sink off to the side. On the lower/ground level is a lovely garden setting with fountains and seating areas. You can easily sit 10 at one time for dinner.
The main house has two bedrooms, the master upstairs with its own bathroom and balcony, and a second down stairs with another full bath. There is a living area upstairs with a balcony, while the full kitchen and dining area are down stairs. Behind the main house is the Casita. It is a one story, palapa-roofed, 2 bedroom, 2 bath house with a huge kitchen - perfect for prepping those big dinner parties - and a nice bar area and living space. It also has incredibly wonderful though subtle decorating touches, helping make this such an amazing property.
We have been going to Akumal for many years and have made lots of friends over the years, this was the perfect spot for us to entertain our local friends and introduce them to our family and friends traveling with us.
The grounds-keeper, Manuel was totally helpful and wonderful, while Roger cleaned up after us and also ended up being the best chef around. We all highly recommend you make arrangements for Roger to cook for you at least one night. His Guacamole is fabulous, as is his salsa. We chose the Maya chicken and local fish dishes, both came with rice and beans and were cooked to perfection. The meal ended with a decadent chocolate desert and flan, both of which were to die for. Eating el fresco under the stars was the perfect ending to our great vacation.
Some of our friends stayed at Hotel Akumal Caribe, which was just down the street. The walk is easy, but we also rented a golf cart for speed and fun. And having access to Hotel Akumal Caribe's sandy beaches were a nice addition.
We all spent one day at Xel-Ha where there was something for everyone - with 5 restaurants and a number of bars everyone was happy for the entire day.
We started most mornings with breakfast at Turtle Bay Cafe, and then people either hung out by the pool or went off in smaller groups exploring new places to eat, snorkeling, beaching or shopping.
All in all this was the perfect set up for our Family-and-Friends Vacation. If you have a group of 8-14 people we would highly recommend the privacy of a villa, and if you need more room you can rent two villas or combine it with hotel rooms or condos.
